British Copper And Bronze Third Farthing Coins

British Copper And Bronze Third Farthing Coins had a value of 1/3rd of a farthing or 1/12th of a penny. The first copper third farthing was issued under the reign of King George IV in 1827. The third farthing had a short mintage with a final coin being struck in 1913. Initially the coin was minted for use in Malta where smaller denominations were needed. The early examples were all stuck in copper until 1866 when the royal mint changed to striking these small coins in bronze. The third farthing coins were demonetised in 1869.
