The 1996 proof sovereign is a coin struck in 22 carat gold by the Royal Mint. The obverse of this Proof Sovereign coin features a right-facing portrait of the Queen by Raphael Maklouf. The portrait shows the Queen wearing a necklace, earrings, and the Diamond Diadem, this is referred to as the third portrait. On the reverse side of this coin you can see Benedetto Pistrucci’s depiction of Saint George slaying a dragon. The coin’s date is also inscribed at the bottom of the reverse. Proof Sovereigns are hand-finished to create a flawless effect, and are often struck multiple times with specially prepared dies to achieve a mirrored finish and clarity of detail.
