The 1988 proof sovereign is a coin struck in 22 carat gold by the Royal Mint.  The obverse of this gold coin features the third crowned portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right. The queen is wearing the George IV State Diadem, with legend around.  On the reverse side of this coin you can see Benedetto Pistrucci’s depiction of Saint George slaying a dragon. The coin’s date is also inscribed at the bottom of the reverse. Proof Sovereigns are hand-finished to create a flawless effect, and are often struck multiple times with specially prepared dies to achieve a mirrored finish and clarity of detail.
