The 1979 proof sovereign is a coin struck in 22 carat gold by the Royal Mint.  The obverse of this gold coin features a right-facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Arnold Machin, this portrait is the second coinage portrait of the Queen by Machin.  On the reverse side of this coin you can see Benedetto Pistrucci’s depiction of Saint George slaying a dragon. The coin’s date is also inscribed at the bottom of the reverse. Proof Sovereigns are hand-finished to create a flawless effect, and are often struck multiple times with specially prepared dies to achieve a mirrored finish and clarity of detail.
