1938 King George VI Silver Four Coin Maundy Set In Near Mint Condition.
Three of these coins are nice examples with good detail. The Fourpence has dark staining on the reverse.
Each coin comes in a small plastic coin envelope.
The 1938 maundy coin set was struck in 0.500 silver by the Royal Mint. The Obverse of each coin features the uncrowned portrait of King George VI facing left, with legend around. The reverse on each coin features the crowned denomination dividing the date within an oak wreath.
Maundy money is struck in denominations of one penny, twopence, threepence, and fourpence. Until the 18th century the coins were given from the circulating coinage, and it was not until the latter half of the century that the four Maundy coins developed as distinct, noncirculating pieces. In most years there are fewer than 2,000 complete sets of Maundy money issued.
