The 1877 maundy fourpence is a coin struck in 0.925 silver by the Royal Mint. The Obverse features the young uncrowned portrait (‘Young Head’) of Queen Victoria facing left, with legend around. The Reverse of this coin depicts a crowned denomination dividing date within an oak wreath.
Maundy money is struck in denominations of one penny, twopence, threepence, and fourpence. Until the 18th century the coins were given from the circulating coinage, and it was not until the latter half of the century that the four Maundy coins developed as distinct, noncirculating pieces. In most Victorian years there were fewer than 4,500 complete sets of Maundy money issued.
