The obverse of the 1869 gold sovereign coin features a large, young portrait of Queen Victoria facing left. The portrait was designed by William Wyon, the Chief Engraver, and shows Victoria at the age of 18 with her hair in a loose bun held by a double fillet. The initials “W.W.” are also incuse on the truncation, with the date appearing below the portrait. The reverse of this coin features a shield design by engraver Jean Baptiste Merlen.

Often referred to as the ‘Shield back sovereign’ the reverse shield design is popular amongst collectors as it is was only used between the dates 1838 and 1887 before the more common St George & Dragon design.
