The 1866 florin is a coin struck in 0.925 silver by the Royal Mint. The Obverse features a crowned bust of Queen Victoria with long hair in a braid. She is wearing a dress embroidered with roses, thistles, and shamrocks, the national plant symbols of England, Scotland, and Ireland. The inscription around the coin is in a medieval gothic style font in upper and lower case, which was unusual for the time.
The Reverse depicts a shield, the shield has three lions passant for England, a lion rampant for Scotland, and a harp for Ireland, with roses, a shamrock, and a thistle in the angles. A flower motif is in the centre, all within a circular panel with a tressure. The reverse legend is in lowercase Gothic style script, except for the “O” of “One”.
