This 1866 French gold coin was minted in Paris. The obverse features Napoleon III, the emperor is facing right wearing a laurel wreath. In a circular arc, “Napoléon III” is inscribed on the left and “empereur” on the right. In the lower middle of the piece, the engraver’s signature (Barre).
The reverse is a complexed design were the imperial symbols are grouped together, the eagle, the crown, the imperial mantle, the cross of the Legion of Honor surmounted by an N for Napoleon, the scepter and the hand of justice. Around this ensemble, in an arc, are the words “Empire Français”. The denomination is placed on either side of the coin, “20” on the left and “FR” on the right. At the bottom of the coin is the year and a letters A in front of the date indicating the Paris mint.
