It was the first sovereign to be minted outside of the UK and is considered very collectible. The Obverse features a profile of a young Queen Victoria facing left, wearing a wreath of banksia, with the date below. On the Reverse this coin has the word “AUSTRALIA” below a royal crown within a wreath of banksia, with “SYDNEY MINT” above the crown and “ONE SOVEREIGN” under a ribbon. This was the first time the denomination appeared on the reverse of any coin in the Empire’s history.
The 1861 Australia gold sovereign was struck at the Sydney Mint in Australian and had a mintage figure of 1,626,000.
