The date and legend are readable. There is scratching on the obverse. There are surface marks on both sides of this used copper coin.

The 1849 farthing was struck in copper by the Royal Mint. The obverse side of the coin features the first uncrowned portrait (‘Young Head’) of Queen Victoria facing left, with legend around, the date below, and initials on bust truncation. The reverse features the seated figure of Britannia, trident in left hand, shield with Union flag in right hand, with legend around, and the national flower emblems in exergue.
