The 1766 maundy coin set was struck in 0.925 silver. The Obverse of each coin features the young laureate and draped bust of King George III facing right, with legend around. The reverse on each coin features a central denomination below crown dividing date, with legend around.

Maundy money is struck in denominations of one penny, twopence, threepence, and fourpence. Until the 18th century the coins were given from the circulating coinage, and it was not until the latter half of the century that the four Maundy coins developed as distinct, noncirculating pieces. In most years there are fewer than 2,000 complete sets of Maundy money issued.
