The 1746 sixpence was a coin struck in 0.925 silver in London by the Royal Mint. The Obverse features a left-facing laureate bust of George II wearing armour and a lion’s head on his shoulder. The Reverse is completed with four crowned shields arranged in a cross to represent the Royal arms of England and Scotland, France and Ireland, with plain angles and a centre garter star. The date is divided and appears at the top of this coin.
This coin was minted using silver captured from Spanish treasure ships in 1745. The ships were carrying silver mined and coined in Peru that was being shipped back to Spain when it was seized off the coast of Lima. The word “LIMA” engraved below the bust on the coin is a reference to its origins.
