The 1688 maundy fourpence is a coin struck in 0.925 silver. This coin features the laureate portrait of King James II facing left, with legend around. The reverse features a centralized denomination with crown above and dividing date, with legend around.
Maundy money is struck in denominations of one penny, twopence, threepence, and fourpence. Until the 18th century the coins were given from the circulating coinage, and it was not until the latter half of the century that the four Maundy coins developed as distinct, noncirculating pieces.
