British Silver Threepence Coins

The British Silver Threepence coins are collectable and were issued by the Royal Mint. The first threepence was struck under the reign of King William IV in 1834. These were currency coins with a value of three pence or one-eightieth of a pound, with a weight of 1.41 grams. Up until 1919 the British silver threepence coins were struck in 0.925 silver. Between 1920 and 1945 these coins were 0.500 silver (although the full mintage of the 1945 coin was melted, a few still exist and are extremely rare). In 1937 a new brass coin was introduced and spent alongside the silver coin. A final proof brass coin was struck in 1970 prior to decimalization in 1971. The threepence continues to be used for Maundy money.
