British Silver Fourpence Coins
The British Silver Fourpence Coins are collectable and were struck by the Royal Mint. These small coins were nicknamed a ‘Groat’ or ‘Joey’. The first fourpence was minted under the reign of King William IV in 1836. These were currency coins with a value of four pence or one-sixieth of a pound. The British silver fourpence coins had a weight of 1.89 grams and were struck in 0.925 silver. While general circulation ended in 1855 due to confusion with the threepence coin, the fourpence continued to be used for Maundy money. Special issues were also minted for British Guiana in 1888.
