British Silver Coins

British silver coins have a long history, dating back over 2,000 years, with Celtic and Roman influences. The Royal Mint has been the primary issuer of British silver coins. Historically, British silver coins were made of sterling silver (92.5% pure) until 1920. The silver content was then reduced to 50%. Eventually the silver was eliminated from circulating coinage after 1946.Today, British silver coins are primarily produced as bullion and commemorative pieces.
