British Maundy Coins
British Maundy coins or money are specially minted silver coins distributed by the reigning monarch. This has been a centuries-old tradition, with the first Maundy money ceremony as we know it today occurring during the reign of Charles II in 1662, when the king presented recipients with undated hammered coins. By 1670, dated sets of four specially struck coins were issued, these consisted of a fourpence, threepence, twopence and penny. This tradition is ongoing to this day.
