British Cupro Nickel Sixpence Coins were first struck in 1947 during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. A replacement program began in 1947 as the British government sought to reduce its use of precious metals. The British cupro nickel sixpence no longer contained any silver and was made from cupronickel. The final sixpence was a proof coin struck in 1970 prior to decimalization in 1971.
