The 1896 silver Florin is a coin struck in 0.925 silver by the Royal Mint.  There is a crowned and veiled bust of Queen Victoria facing left, with legend around on the obverse. This portrait is often referred to as the old head. The reverse is completed with a crown above shields of England, Scotland and Ireland with national flower emblems between, all within Garter with divided date below and legend around.

The florin was introduced in 1849 as part of the British coinage’s move towards decimalization. This coin was worth 1/10th of a pound or 2 shillings. It was more commonly known as the 2 shilling coin. It is equivalent to the current ten pence coin.

This 1896 florin coin had a mintage figure of 2,944,416.
