The 1887 gold half sovereign was the first to feature the Jubilee effigy of Queen Victoria, this portrait was issued to commemorate her Golden Jubilee. The Jubilee head was designed by J.E. Boehm on the obverse and this coin has a shield designed on the reverse by John Baptiste Merlen.
