The date and legend are readable. There are surface marks and tiny edge nicks on both sides of this used copper coin.

The 1843 penny was struck in copper by the Royal Mint. The obverse side of the coin Features a young head of Queen Victoria facing left with a ribbon in her hair, the artist’s initials W.W. incuse on the neck truncation, with the date 1843 below. The reverse side of the coin depicts Britannia seated facing right holding a trident and resting her right hand on a shield. A rose, thistle, and shamrock are united in the exergue.
