The 2016 proof sovereign is a coin struck in 22 carat gold by the Royal Mint. The obverse features the limited release Butler effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, with legend around. On the reverse side of this coin you can see Benedetto Pistrucci’s depiction of Saint George slaying a dragon. The coin’s date is also inscribed at the bottom of the reverse.
Proof Sovereigns are hand-finished to create a flawless effect, and are often struck multiple times with specially prepared dies to achieve a mirrored finish and clarity of detail.
