During the German Occupation, Jersey issued an emergency set of banknotes due to a shortage of British banknotes and coinage. Local artist Edmund Blampied was commissioned to design a series of notes that would be issued by the States of Jersey in denominations of sixpence, one, two and ten shillings, and one pound.

When the sixpence was folded in four, a prominent letter V (“Victory”) was displayed as a hidden act of defiance against the island’s occupiers. These small acts went unnoticed by the Germans, but helped raise morale.
