The 1989 proof sovereign is a coin struck in 22 carat gold by the Royal Mint to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the first hammered gold Sovereign in 1489. It was a one-year issue and is considered a sought-after celebratory edition. The coin features Queen Elizabeth II seated on King Edward’s Coronation throne on the obverse, and a double Tudor Rose with the Royal Arms shield and an open King’s Crown on the reverse. The reverse also includes the legend “ANNIVERSARY OF THE GOLD SOVEREIGN 1489 1989”. Proof Sovereigns are hand-finished to create a flawless effect, and are often struck multiple times with specially prepared dies to achieve a mirrored finish and clarity of detail.

This proof gold coin had a mintage figure of 23,471.
